Well, I Went To The Underground RR Freedom Center today and...

Was very surprised. I went in open minded about what I was going to see and hear and was impressed by the place. It is set up well and the building itself is kinda cool. But, it's not just for those interested in Black history and slavery, it's for anyone who's interested in American history. Since the civil war is the backdrop for the underground railroad and slavery itself, much of the focus is on the civil war. Plenty of artifacts, and documents including copies of inaguaral addresses, the declaration of Independence, the emancipation proclimation and much more. It's not a depressing place even though many of the stories are depressing and it was a very bleak spot in American history, but it is very informative and there are exhibits that range from then to now. Lots of films, but none are too long (one wasnt working when I went in) and some lead from one to another with story lines.
Look, I know many people around here are sceptics of the place, but if you are into American history you can't overlook the civil war era and that is where the Underground Railroad rightfully puts much emphasis.
I thought the place was pretty [img]cool.gif[/img] and I learned a few things. There are interactive exhibits and even places for you to give your own opinions.
And the staff was really friendly.
I'll go ahead and say that I'd reccomend it as a field trip for an american history class.
And as a day trip for any civil war or american history buff.

Since the Civil War was about state's rights and not slavery, I don't quite see the connection.

First- Reason you are a useless worthless idiot!

By the way reason, before you make wimp like references about people you should look in the mirror to see what one really looks like.

Second- Gae, the whole slavery thing is also based on the differences between the northern and southern states. Even though, northern states at one time also had slavery. The war itself was based on the same boundaries and the Ohio river was a border between them. The end of the war and the end of slavery follow along the same timeline. It's worth checking out.

I will go, and keep an open-mind about it, but at the same time I must admit I will be viewing things through my usual scientific-based, skeptical, critical, well-observed eyes.

The Quakers in this area played a huge role in the underground railroad, let's see if they get any run....

They do Lew. In fact the whole Oprah nararated film is based on Ripley Ohio and John Parker and Rev John Rankin and his family.


Lew, you'll probably like the third floor as well, especially the civil war stuff.

When you go in, the first floor has the ticket counter and gift shoppe. Next level has interactive stufff, movie theatre/ conference room and the slave pen but..
I thought the third floor had the most interesting stuff.

Everyone will take something different from their visit.
